Why Homeopathy?

  • Homeopathy is a long established system of medicine which works to help the body's own power to heal itself.

  • It is successful over a wide range of problems from quite minor conditions to very serious complaints.

  • Homeopathy can help when people have long standing or recurrent problems whether these are physical or emotional. For example if there are stress related physical symptoms; if there has been emotional trauma in your life; if conventional medicine is not helping a physical ailment; if you have children with problems.

  • Children usually respond to homeopathy very well indeed.

What is a Consultation Like?

  • The first consultation will take some time, one and a half hours or more.

  • You will do most of the talking.

  • Almost every aspect of your life will be covered – in complete confidence.

  • There is no physical examination.

  • Therefore be prepared to talk at length - and to be listened to.

Apart from your life history, you will be asked about your likes and dislikes, food preferences, sleep and medical history. Some of this may seem unrelated to your complaint but homoeopathy aims to return the whole person to health. All this provides information for the homeopath to choose the remedy or remedies which most individually suit your symptoms. The second consultation (the follow up) is a much shorter meeting, half an hour or so, and usually takes place two to four weeks later - it will take this time for a remedy to work on your constitution sufficiently for the homeopath to assess progress. The third consultation will also be two to four weeks later again. After this, consultations are usually much less frequent and depend upon the individual needs of the patient.

What can I Expect to Happen?

Each case is different. The remedies you are given will be chosen to match your own symptoms as you experience and express them. There are a number of known reactions to homeopathic remedies depending upon

  • how long you have had your problem

  • what type of problem it is

  • what previous or current medicines you have taken

  • how strong you are within yourself

  • and how the remedy is administered.

You may experience
  • an in initial boost of energy

  • a short period of listlessness

  • the temporary appearance of an old symptom

  • a marked change in your general disposition

  • or indeed no obvious difference at all.

Each has its place.

Following some initial signs which show that the remedy has started to work, the body continues to respond sometimes very obviously sometimes imperceptibly from day to day for some weeks. At the follow up, the homoeopath is able to assess the changes that have taken place. Then, depending upon the nature of the problem, it may need more time or a further remedy.

How are Remedies Given?

Homeopathic remedies are usually given in one of three forms –
  • as small tablets

  • as a water based liquid

  • as a powder

The remedy will dissolve easily under the tongue and you will be asked not to eat or drink for twenty minutes before and after taking it. The most common response to this by patients is surprise that the remedy is so small.

A single tablet contains in it the potency of a remedy which will last for some weeks. Sometimes you will be prescribed a group of tablets, sometimes a single tablet only. In this respect homeopathy is very different from conventional medicine. Homeopathy is not chemical medicine, it uses the least amount to obtain a response from the body's natural tendency to heal itself, it has no side effects and is non-addictive. Furthermore, for over two hundred years all homeopathic remedies have been developed on humans and not animals.

However, before a remedy is given, the homeopath will need to analyse the case for a day or so. This is why you will probably receive your remedy by post a few days after the initial consultation.

How long does a treatment take?

Of course, all cases are different. After the first long visit, I require patients to attend at least two follow up visits as part of the treatment so that progress can be properly assessed. These should take half an hour each. I am very keen to inform and therefore involve each person in their own progress. Further visits are therefore discussed.

Children’s cases are usually resolved in a matter of a few weeks, sometimes quicker. But in adults the duration of cure can be affected by how long the patient has had the problem, how well the patient reacted to the first remedy and whether a second is required. At each stage, the patient’s own input helps to determine the course of the treatment. Once a remedy has worked well some patients like to keep in touch. I am always happy to be available for patients on a continuing basis.
